Yoga Provides Emotional Benefits To Women With Breast Cancer

yoga and cancer
Women undertaking a ten week program of 75 minute Restorative Yoga (RY) classes gained positive differences in aspects of mental health such as depression, positive emotions, and spirituality (feeling calm/peaceful) compared to the control group. The study, published February 28 in a special issue of Psycho-Oncology focusing on physical activity, shows the women had a 50% reduction in depression and a 12% increase in feelings of peace and meaning after the yoga sessions.

RY is a gentle type of yoga which is similar to other types of yoga classes, moving the spine in all directions but in a more passive and gentle way. Props such as cushions, bolsters, and blankets provide complete physical support for total relaxation with minimal physical effort, and so people in differing levels of health can practice yoga more easily.

44 women took part in the study, with 22 undertaking the yoga classes and 22 in the waitlist control group. All of the women had breast cancer; 34% were actively undergoing cancer treatment while the majority had already completed treatment. All participants completed a questionnaire at the beginning and end of the ten week program, asking them to evaluate their quality of life through various measures. The results clearly showed that the women who had been given the RY classes experienced a wide range of benefits compared to the control group (who were later all invited to attend identical RY classes).

"Evidence from systematic reviews of randomized trials is quite strong that mind-body therapies improve mood, quality of life, and treatment-related symptoms in people with cancer. Yoga is one mind-body therapy that is widely available and involves relatively reasonable costs," said lead researcher Suzanne Danhauer, Ph.D., based at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. "Given the high levels of stress and distress that many women with breast cancer experience, the opportunity to experience feeling more peaceful and calm in the midst of breast cancer is a significant benefit."

The study found that women who started with higher negative emotions and lower emotional well-being derived greater benefit from the gentle yoga intervention compared to the control group. Women in the gentle yoga group also demonstrated a significant within-group improvement in fatigue, while no such change was noted for the control group.

"This was a pilot study to identify the worthiness and feasibility of conducting a larger randomized control trial on restorative yoga and women with breast cancer," added Danhauer. "Our results are very promising and will allow us to embark on a much larger scale study."

In the case of normal mouth ulcers the internal membrane gets swollen and wounded and causes severe pain. If this problem aggravates further then boils and wounds spread in the whole mouth, saliva is secreted continuously, and lot of sputum is produced. At times the patient also has mild fever. Normally its symptoms resemble with bleeding ulcers or the ones caused due to bile.

TYPES OF MOUTH ULCERS

Painful ulcers:

In this case boils appear inside the mouth and causes burning sensation, the rotten part separates. They seem to be normal boils in the beginning stage but slowly increase in size. This causes painful cough and symptoms of fever. Tridosha ulcers: The symptoms of vata, pitta and kapha are seen in this case.

Ulcers due to bad odour: The ulcers produce very bad smell.

In yet another type: The ulcers pop up and break, the face is like pulp. One type of ulcer is considered to be due to tridosha. In this case a round and high tumor appears, which causes pain.

This disease is common among children in the age group of 3 to 6 years.

In yet another type of mouth ulcer the symptoms similar to the one caused due to kapha, are noticed. The tongue has white coating and mucous like thing. First whitish boils appear on the tongue, which increase in size and reach the base, tongue and throat, Then they join together. Sometimes the child patient has mild fever, loose motions and vomiting. But saliva is not secreted. According to the specialists this is common among the children when they drink polluted milk. The children who drink outside milk also suffer from this disease because the milk bottle is generally not cleaned properly; the bacteria get accumulated and reach the child's mouth through this polluted

Normally the mouth ulcers are; caused due to constipation, if the child is prevented from this problem then it protected from mouth ulcers. In case the disease is caused then medicines for curing the digestive system should be given. General types of problems can be cured with external remedies. Therefore it would be better to divide it into two parts depending on the type of medicine used.

DISEASES OF THE TONGUE

According to ayurveda the diseases of the tongue have been included in the mouth. There are six types of tongue diseases according to it.

1. vataj
2. pittaj
3. kaphaj
4. alas
5. adhijeebh
6. upjeebh

Main symptoms:

- In the vataj type the tongue cracks, which does not give any type of taste. The tongue becomes rough like the vegetable leaf.

- In the second type the tongue becomes yellow in color with burning sensation. Reddish colored spikes appear on the tongue.

- In the third type the tongue becomes heavy and fleshy spikes appear on it.

- In the fourth type the disease is caused due to the doshas of kapha and blood. There is severe swelling under the tongue and when the disease increases then pus is formed in the base of the tongue and blocked. That means the tongue does not move nor rotates. When the patient tries to rotate it severe pain is experienced.

- In another type of tongue problem caused due to blood and kapha there is swelling on the upper side of the tongue, it rips and becomes somewhat incurable.

- In the sixth type of mouth ulcer the tongue bends and gets swollen due the dosha of kapha and blood. Lot of saliva is formed in the mouth with itching and burning sensation. The patient does not have the taste of anything.

If we look at the causes along with the symptoms we can know that this disease is caused due to wrong eating habits. The worms are created in the stomach, which aggravate the disease. The causes for mouth ulcers and diseases of the tongue are similar. According to the western scientists, this disease is caused due to hookworm. If this worm is removed with the help of some medicine then the disease of the tongue can be cured easily.

In case of chronic disorder of the bowels the children tend to get diseases of the tongue, if bowel disorder is cured the tongue diseases gets cured on its own. In the case of Erithima migrance disease the tongue bends. There are reddish spots formed on the upper layer of the tongue, which keep on changing places. These types of spots are also seen in few types of fever. The spikes in the tongue have darkish tan and appear to be black in color. Those who are used to drink Hukka normally have black tongue but they do not have any disease and hence do not require any medication. In the disease called microglacia the tongue becomes thick and is a hereditary problem. It also does not require any treatment. Such children should be given thyroid tablets so that the thickness of the tongue reduces to some extent. In some children the tongue protrudes out and they have the habit to rotate it, this also makes their tongue thick.

The tongue related problems also arise due to fever caused due to tridoshas. The tongue becomes rough and contains spikes but its cure depends on the basic diseases. If the fever is not cured then the tongue related disease also does not get cured. In some cases the chin becomes small and the tongue becomes thick.

In this case the tongue can move towards the respiratory pipe and blocks its path. At this stage surgery proves to be helpful. The children who have long tongue, they find difficulty while drinking milk. They should be faced upside down and made to drink milk and the child is able to drink milk easily.

REMEDIES FOR TONGUE DISEASES

- In case of disease caused due to vata dosha, shilvana lep proves to be beneficial.

Ayurvedic Spas Becoming Popular Tralve Destinations

People all over the world are rediscovering the joys of nature. The latest in this trend are the Ayurvedic spas and resorts which have mushroomed in several Indian and foreign destinations in the recent few years. These Ayurvedic spas are situated in idyllic locations amidst natural beauty, and are run by a team of people proficient in the principles of Ayurvedic techniques. The focus is on healing and rejuvenation of the body through Ayurveda and its complementary science, yoga. Techniques like shirodhara, praanayama, yogic asanas and several Ayurvedic therapies are practiced in these spas and resorts.

The Travel Agents Association of India has confirmed the popularity of these Ayurvedic spas all over the world. They have mentioned the presence of an Indian as well as a foreign clientele to their spas, and have also affirmed an increase in the numbers of people visiting the spas. The basic reason for this increasing number of people visiting Ayurvedic resorts is the enormous amount of information available on the net, which has made the whole world conscious of the miracles of Ayurvedic cure.

There is also another intriguing trend. In the past, it was observed that only middle-aged or elderly people would visit such Ayurvedic resorts. But in recent years, there has been a sharp increase in the number of younger population visiting them. Parents often take their children along also, making the age of the average Ayurvedic spa visitor quite less.

More than the Indians, foreigners are visiting Ayurvedic spas. According to estimates by the Travel Agents Association of India, about 95% of the visitors of Ayurvedic spas are foreigners. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, these spas are perhaps the only outlets for the foreigners to learn about yoga and Ayurveda, while for Indians there are several other options. Another reason is that these spas are very expensive, and so they are generally out of the average Indian family’s budget.

Many of such Ayurvedic resorts are located in the south Indian state of Kerala, which is called as God’s own country. Kerala is perhaps the most prolific state in the advancement of Ayurveda in the world. They have brought in their own version of several of the Ayurvedic therapies, which is evident by their own massage technique, popularly known as the Kerala Ayurvedic Massage.

Other south Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh also are developing their own spas and resorts based around Ayurveda. Each Ayurvedic spa and resort takes its identity from the state in which it is located. North Indian states like Gujarat and Uttaranchal are also famous for their spas and resorts, though they are not as much prolific here as the ones in south India. Though many Ayurvedic spas and resorts have established themselves in foreign countries like Switzerland, Belgium, France and America, their growth is still abysmal compared to world standards. It will be a while before Ayurvedic spas and resorts can establish a firm footing on a global scale.

Almost all the popular Ayurvedic spas and resorts have their own websites, detailing their procedures and costs. They are sometimes associated with hotels to provide better accommodation to their clients. A simple search on the internet will provide information about various Ayurvedic spas and resorts in India.

By introducing Ayurveda in the concept of hospitality, the Indian Ayurvedic scene is sure to increase by leaps and bounds. Already, a boom in the number of visitors in these resorts is predicted and the figures coming in every month only prove that the upward trend is here to stay for a long time to come.

The south Indian state of Kerala is called as God's own country. This beach state is filled with the bounties of nature, especially the tall coconut palms that dot the entire coastline of the state. In addition, there are several forests in Kerala, which give some coolness to this otherwise smoldering tropical state. Kerala is very popular all over the world for its martial arts, rice and gravy cuisine and of course, the boat races on its lagoons, such as the Vembanad.

Along with all this, Kerala has always been recognized as the Ayurvedic hub of India . Ayurveda did not originate specifically in this state, but due to its rich herbal wealth, Kerala today undoubtedly ranks the first in all products pertaining to this science. Added to this, the people of Kerala have also had the business acumen of promoting Ayurveda as a unique natural therapeutic brand among the western population.

The herbal industry in the US itself is pegged at around $40 billion dollars, out of which a major production is somehow sourced from Kerala. Kerala also has the largest number of Ayurveda based resorts and retreats in the world. These resorts are known as vaidya shalas, and are usually located on the idyllic beaches of Kerala. More than the Indian population, these resorts attract foreigners, mostly people from America and Europe .

The Ayurvedic spas in Kerala promote the herbal science as a method of treatment and rejuvenation. They entail a weekly to a fortnightly stay in the resorts, and visitors are provided with several methods of Ayurvedic treatments. The most famous is of course the full body Ayurvedic massage. This massage is performed with the subject lying disrobed on the sand of the beach, while the body is smeared with several Ayurvedic oils. The Ayurvedic massage differs greatly from other massage techniques adopted all over the world. For one, the oils used are strictly herbal, and are often quite strong smelling. Even the mode of massaging is quite vigorous. The masseur will adopt short but sharp strokes on the body, which would not be painful due to the excessive lubrication used.

Another traditional form of massage requires the person to sit on a chair, while the masseur works on different parts of the body.

Kerala is also very famous for using the Panchakarma therapies. This is an entire natural regimen of purifying the body and making it rejuvenated. Panchakarma, which literally means 'five actions', has been investigated by American scientists and found it to be quite a reliable approach at treatment.

Pranayama and Yoga are part of the therapies used at Ayurvedic resorts. Shirodhara is one more Ayurvedic technique often used, in which a steady stream of oil is allowed to pour on the forehead of the person. These techniques are very beneficial in stimulating physical and mental wellbeing of the person.

Kerala has very little needed to do in order to make their guests feel at home. In fact the state has so many natural amenities, that the resorts do not need to be very well-furnished. In fact, most of Kerala resorts use very basic living places, for that is the very essence of Ayurveda – to be one with nature. Living in plush quarters takes away greatly from what the natural therapy sets out to do.

Needless to say, Kerala earns a lot of foreign revenue through its foreign guests in these Ayurvedic resorts and spas. A fortnightly stay in these places could cost up to $2,000 to $4,000 per person depending on the reputation of the place. Bookings are taken online all around the year. With Kerala, the tourist season never stops. At all times, the beaches are crowded with tourists making the best of their vacations, and trying to make their lives healthier.

Spirituality Is Important To Eye Patients, Report Finds

Patients visiting an ophthalmologist report that prayer is important to their well-being and that God plays a positive role in illness, according to a new report.

Ethical medical practice includes physician behavior, beyond technical competence, that promotes healing and optimizes the patient's welfare," the authors write as background information in the article. "The physician who respects the patient as a person with dignity must acknowledge the patient's value system to establish a relationship that permits conversations that nourish trust for joint therapeutic decision making.
For many patients, religion and spirituality is important to their value system and may represent a unique source of motivation and coping with life events, including the experience of personal illness (illness refers to the response of a patient to a disease)."

Gina Magyar-Russell, Ph.D., of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, and colleagues distributed a brief questionnaire to 124 patients visiting the office of one ophthalmologist. The 14-question survey was completed by the patient and collected without any identifying information, so patients could be assured the answers would not affect their care.
Of the participants:

76.6 percent were Christian, 5.6 percent Jewish and 3.2 percent agnostic
69.4 percent reported that prayer was very important to their sense of well-being and 12.9 percent that it was moderately important
45.2 percent attend religious services at least once per week
41.1 percent agreed that God permits illness but doesn't cause it, and 54.8 percent believe God can influence a cure
58.1 percent report that God can directly help physicians treat illness
67.7 percent agree that God helps them be "at peace" with their illness

Most believe either that illness is a way to make one stronger (32.3 percent) or that it is a mystery (36.3 percent) rather than a punishment from God (4 percent) or a test (22.6 percent)
"Christians were more likely to believe that God can influence cure than were Jewish and agnostic participants, and there was a trend toward Christians believing that God gives strength to be 'at peace' with illness compared with Jewish and agnostic participants," the authors write. "Christians also reported more frequent religious and spiritual service attendance, and they rated prayer as more important than individuals reporting Jewish and agnostic belief systems."

"The data obtained from this questionnaire suggest that patients' expressions of religion and spirituality should be assessed and acknowledged by their ophthalmologist," the authors write. "Obtaining a brief religious and spiritual history, when it becomes a routine part of developing a relationship between the patient and the physician, may become more comfortable for the physician with time, add to an understanding of the patient's value system, provide the patient with a greater sense of trust in the physician and assist in the healing process, especially when a cure is not possible."

This study was supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (Dr. Magyar-Russell).
